If you didn’t have a chance to see the exhibit in person in 2019, we are excited to share that you’ll have another chance to explore the world with Franklina, this time online! Our new online exhibit will launch next week. Check back in for more details soon!

One of our favorite parts of working on the “Franklina C. Gray: The Grand Tour” book and exhibit was uncovering the love story between Franklina and her fiancé William. While Franklina was on her Grand Tour, she and William kept in touch via many letters. William must have been missing Franklina something fierce, as he went out on a limb and asked for her to send him a photograph of herself with her hair down in the style of Ophelia. Franklina obliged her love, and responded--

"Your request about the likeness puzzled me a little. But then a likeness in the style of Ophelia with the motto 'I’m mad, I’m mad'!! I have at Mentone no low necked dress. So you see my love, fulfilling your entire request was impossible. But, I did my best! I donned a lovely white muslin, let down my mane & had the picture took! You must take the will to the deed” (Letter, February 4, 1877)
