Read Like Franklina

Franklina C. Bartlett (nee Gray) and her family moved into the Camron-Stanford House in 1877 after returning home from a two year Grand Tour around Europe and the Middle East. Franklina was an avid reader, and a writer herself. In her journals and letters she often wrote about her favorite authors and what she was reading at the time. If you are looking for a new book to read, we invite you to explore some favorites that likely found homes on Franklina’s own book shelf:

"Kenilworth" by Sir Walter Scott
Kenilworth is a historical fiction book about the love affair between Queen Elizabeth I and Robert Duddley. In her journals, Franklina remarked on the experience of seeing some of the places mentioned in the book in real life:

“I have been reading ‘Kenilworth’ to day & I am haunted by the ghost of poor Amy Robart. Scott’s account of the fetes upon the Pleasance seem very vivid now that I have stood upon the very spot where Queen Elizabeth held court.” (p. 39)
