Iliana is one of the Assistant Directors at the Camron-Stanford House, working with Exhibits and Collections. Iliana holds a bachelor's degree in History from CSU San Marcos and a master's degree in Museum Studies from Harvard University, where she focused her studies on historic house museums and the intersection of community engagement and collection management. If you've been to the Camron-Stanford House you might have noticed this painting of three ducks hanging in the dining room. Many have asked why we decided to hang this scene in our formal dining room, especially when the room is often used during wedding celebrations and formal teas. It's a bit of a complicated story, but we are honoring the wishes and intentions of one of our honored donors and longtime supporters.
Gabriel Sheridan donated many of the artworks you see in the Camron-Stanford House today. For this one in particular, he had a special wish that he asked us to honor: "This gift is given to commemorate all those ho have died, like these lovely birds, in their youth, of Aids, to remain in the dining room of the Camron-Stanford House, forever." Today we celebrate Juneteenth with our Oakland community, to remember the day in 1865 when those who still remained enslaved after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued two years prior, finally learned they were free. We honor this day as a time to reflect on the past and hope for the future. To those celebrating this day, Happy Juneteenth from all of us at the Camron-Stanford House.
