Franklina C. Gray: The Grand Tour

An Online Exhibit Presented by the Camron-Stanford House

Franklina C. Gray: The Grand Tour is an online exhibit that builds off the original in-person exhibit shown at Camron-Stanford House in 2019. Using Franklina Gray’s personal writings, objects from the museum’s collection, and additional archival resources, this exhibit follows a young Victorian woman as she travelled from Oakland, across the United States, and through Europe and the Middle East between 1875-1877.

Not just a colorful and compelling story of late 19th century womanhood, Franklina’s Grand Tour offers many opportunities to understand the important contributions of the working class at this time. By comparing Franklina’s experiences with those of the laboring people around her, this online exhibit seeks to paint a dynamic picture of Victorian travel and leisure.
