In 1863, San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors passed a law that criminalized appearing in public in “a dress not belonging to his or her sex.” Adopted as part of a broader anti-indecency campaign, cross-dressing law became a flexible tool for policing multiple gender transgressions, facilitating over one hundred arrests before the century’s end. The Menagerie Oddities & Curiosities Market is pleased to present the Secret Garden... Proceeds from this Victorian inspired fundraising event will help support Oakland's Camron-Stanford House, the last standing Victorian on Lake Merritt. The house, now turned museum, is a wonderful snapshot of a by-gone era with a detailed chronicling of what Victorian life was like in the East Bay.
